Tour Overview
Calligraphy developed in China and began in earnest in Japan around the 6th century when it was introduced from China, along with brush, ink, and paper making techniques.
At the time, calligraphy was considered an indispensable part of Japanese aristocracy and samurai culture, but over time it spread to the entire population of Japan.
In modern Japan, calligraphy is taught in compulsory education, and many Japanese value very highly the ability to write beautiful letters, regardless of whether it is with a brush or a hard brush.
In this experience, we will teach you the basics of calligraphy, which has a great impact on our sense of beauty.
Why not learn how to use a brush, inkstone, and ink, as well as how to write basic dots, splashes, straight lines, and curves?
It is interesting that there are many different types of brushes, and even a single character that looks simple will look different when you know the basics of calligraphy.
At the end of the lesson, you will be able to write a Kanji of your choice.
You can take your work home in a hanging scroll.
The experience will be held at our Kanazawa Machiya, IN KANAZAWA HOUSE.
Please enjoy a peaceful afternoon concentrating on writing in this machiya-style building.
The instructor will vary depending on the size of the group, but will be an experienced instructor who is fluent in English.
In addition to writing well, we hope you will enjoy talking about the spirit of calligraphy and the meanings of the each letters.
