Tour Overview
A Private Kintsugi Experience in Kanazawa
Visit the private workshop of a Kaga maki-e artisan and discover the materials, skills and philosophy behind Japanese kintsugi. This private kintsugi experience in Kanazawa combines an artisan workshop visit with a carefully guided hands-on activity. Rather than simply attending a craft class, guests are invited into the working environment of a lacquer artist and introduced to the traditions of Kaga maki-e and Japanese lacquerware. During the experience, you will work on a piece that has been prepared in advance by the artisan. You will participate in selected finishing stages, including applying lacquer to the final joint and adding gold decoration with the traditional tools and materials provided. Your completed piece can be taken home as a personal reminder of your time in Kanazawa. This experience is designed for a private group of up to three guests, allowing time for close observation, questions and personalized guidance.
What Is Kintsugi?
Kintsugi is a Japanese lacquer technique used to repair damaged ceramics. Traditionally, broken pieces are joined and restored using urushi lacquer. The repaired lines are then finished with decorative metal powder, often gold or silver. Instead of attempting to hide the damage completely, kintsugi allows the repaired areas to remain visible as part of the objects history. The result is not simply a repaired object. Every line reflects what happened to the piece and how it was given a new life. Kintsugi is often associated with an appreciation of imperfection, change and continuity. For many people, its appeal lies in the idea that signs of damage do not always need to be erased. They can be accepted and transformed into a new source of character and beauty.
What Will You Do During the Experience?
Traditional kintsugi involves several stages of joining, filling, drying, polishing and finishing. The complete process can take weeks or months because natural lacquer requires repeated drying and curing. For this short cultural experience, the artisan prepares the piece through the earlier stages before your visit. Guests then participate in selected finishing stages that can be completed safely within the scheduled time.
You will:
-
Visit the artisan’s private working environment
-
See examples of lacquerware and Kaga maki-e

-
Apply lacquer to a prepared final joint
-
Add gold decoration under the artisan’s guidance
-
Enjoy time for questions and conversation
-
Take home the piece you helped complete
This is not a full repair course in which guests bring and restore their own broken ceramics from the first stage. It is a carefully prepared introduction to traditional kintsugi and lacquer craftsmanship.

Discover Kaga Maki-e
Maki-e is a Japanese lacquer decoration technique in which gold, silver or other metal powders are applied to lacquer to create detailed designs. Kaga maki-e developed in Kanazawa alongside the city’s rich culture of crafts, tea ceremony and decorative arts. It is particularly admired for its precise control of gold powder and its ability to create depth and perspective through repeated application and polishing. Although kintsugi and maki-e serve different purposes, both depend on a deep understanding of lacquer, surface preparation, timing and metal decoration. By visiting a Kaga maki-e workshop, guests can see how the skills of a lacquer artist extend beyond repair and contribute to a wider tradition of Japanese decorative art.
Meet the Artisan
Akihito Kiyose is the third-generation successor of the Kiyose family’s Kaga maki-e tradition. Born in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, in 1969, he moved to Kanazawa at the age of five. As a child, he became interested in maki-e while watching his grandfather, the first Ikko Kiyose, work in the family studio. At the age of 23, he began working professionally in the family’s maki-e workshop. Since then, he has continued to refine traditional Kaga maki-e techniques while exploring new forms of artistic expression. In 2006, he was certified as a Traditional Craftsman. In 2012, he was recognized by Ishikawa Prefecture as an Excellent Craftsman of Traditional Industry. His work combines the rich decorative qualities of Kaga maki-e with the precision required for delicate gold and lacquer expression.
Visit a Working Artisan’s Studio
The experience takes place in the artisan’s private workshop and home environment. Unlike a museum display, a working studio provides a closer view of how traditional craft is practiced in everyday life. You may see tools, materials, work in progress and completed pieces that illustrate the patience and technical skill required for lacquer art. Because the workshop is a private working space, guests must meet the guide at the designated meeting point. Please do not go directly to the workshop. The guide will meet you near IPPON MATSU RIKKYO and accompany you on the short walk to the artisan’s workshop. Please respect the artisan’s workspace and follow all instructions concerning photography, touching tools and handling artworks.
